The Rotary Club of Farnborough is active throughout the year.
Our main objective is to raise funds for the local community and we do this by organising both internal club events and local community events - our biggest being the bi-annual Picnic to Music In The Park.
- The Rotary Foundation (Rotary's own charity) has long been supported by the Farnborough Club with funds being raised at the annual Foundation evening, traditionally held in St Marks Church Hall, Alexandra Road, Farnborough. An evening with invited speakers concluding with a superb buffet supper provided by the Farnborough Inner Wheel.
- The club takes a break towards the end of April with a weekend away. A different venue and programme is chosen each year.
- Donkey Derby is always held on Spring Bank Holiday Monday at King George V Playing Field, Sycamore Road Farnborough. Organised by a committee made up of members from the Rotary Clubs of Farnborough, Rushmoor and Blackwater Valley this event gives many local Clubs and Charities an opportunity to raise funds for their own purposes under the overall support given by the Rotary Clubs. It is not unknown for 10,000 people to attend the event with its many attractions including a funfair, dog show, baby show and a host of staged events including dance, voice and instruments. And of course the donkey races.
- KidsOut takes place on the second Wednesday of June each year when about 600 disadvantaged and special needs children have a fun packed day out at the Aldershot Rugby Stadium supported by their carers and very many Rotarians. Clowns, balloons, rides, and a petting farm are amongst the may attractions The event runs from 10am to 3pm with lunch and drinks being served by members of Inner Wheel and their helpers. This national event happens on the same day all over the country. The Aldershot event is organised by the group of Rotary Clubs around the site of the venue.
- The annual garden party raising much needed funds for Devereux House (local residential care home) is supported each year by the club with a bottle stall.
- Picnic to Music In the Park is a two day weekend event held alternate years also at King George V Playing Field, Sycamore Road Farnborough, with the next one being in July 2009. Music and fireworks entertain large crowds who helped to raise about £70,000 for The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in 2007.
- Knellwood’s open day (local residential care home) each August is supported by the club carrying out a little fundraising for the home with lawn games.
- December sees the club’s Christmas float being towed around the streets of Farnborough each evening and placed at static sites including Queensmead on each market day and at weekends. In addition to the Farnborough Rotarians and their families several of the local charities including Devereux House, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and Parity assist with the collections and in so doing benefit their own charities. A concentrated month of work realises over £12,000 which is used to fund the many diverse projects in which the club is involved.
- Young Chef is an annual competition for teenagers in full time education, school or college. They have to produce a three course meal for two within a timeframe and to a standard that demonstrates planning, routine, cooking skills and an understanding of presentation. The meal has to be underpinned by a theme of healthy eating and must fall within a budget of £14.00 for cost of food.
Farnborough is one of the local Rotary clubs that each sponsor one or more students for this competition. The local winners progress to District, Regional and National levels of the competition.
The students enjoy the interaction and thrive on the competitiveness whilst learning by watching. The competition also builds links between the educational establishments and Rotary.
- Twice a year, on behalf of the Hampshire Association for the Care of the Blind, we transport visually impaired folk to the Princes Hall, Aldershot, for a performance of the latest production of the Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society.
